Mexican hammocks were first used by the Mayan people of Central America around 2000 years ago. In Mexico today people still widely use string (or Mexican) hammocks using traditional weaving methods but replacing the tree bark of old with infinitely more comfortable cotton! The woven cotton strings of a Mexican hammock provide a soft yet supportive bed that moulds itself with the contours of your body; their thousands of tiny holes provide perfect air circulation and a feeling of floating on air. Don’t be fooled by other Mexican hammocks made with nylon string - they may sound ideal but they feel pretty nasty to lie on (believe us, we’ve tried them). Despite their rather delicate appearance, Mexican hammocks are a lot tougher than they look and they hold a lot of weight – they’re designed to sleep whole Mexican families! Mexican Hammocks are actually our strongest type of hammock as they will easily hold 200kg. However they need slightly more looking after than Well Hung Travel Hammocks as (like Brazillian Hammocks) they shouldn’t really be left out in the rain as the cotton will eventually rot. They’re also easier to catch on shoes and children’s toys etc. and although it is very hard to snap the strings, they are easy enough to mend if they do somehow break. The secret of any good hammock is all in the spread, and these hammocks spread very wide indeed since the whole idea is to lie diagonally or across the hammock, not from end to end as many people expect. Our large hammock is a perfect double but it’s actually more of a king-size. There were reports of one of our customers cramming 9 people into our large Mexican hammock at a party but unfortunately we only have their word for it as they didn’t bring photos to prove it! As with Well Hung Travel Hammocks, Mexican hammocks can be hung virtually anywhere both indoors and outside - we have accessories for hanging them - and they pack away small enough to take with you on your travels (they too have their own bag). There’s no excuse for not using them anywhere and everywhere you go - camping, traveling, holidays, festivals, trips to the park... You can’t get much more traditional than a Mexican hammock if you want a truly eye-catching addition to your house or garden as they are perfectly suitable and easy to use both outside or indoors. But not only do Mexican Hammocks look divine, they are amazingly comfortable to lie in! This hammock can be hung from trees and posts etc using our simple rope and hook system. It also fits on our large hammock stand or can be easily hung on wall hooks or masonry hooks (both outdoors or inside the house), all of which are available separately from us. For advice on how to hang a hammock or to see what hanging accessories there are, go to our faq section. If you have any hammock-related queries don't hesitate to contact us by phone or email. Or if you would like to try our hammocks before you buy you can visit our specialist hammock shop in Camden Lock Market, London, UK, every weekend. |
